I just had my Borla exhaust put on and it smells like shiznit! (And no, I'm not stickin' my face in the exhaust pipe, lol). When I'm stopped at a stop light it emits this really nasty chemical smell. I noticed the dude who installed was spraying something on it when he was done (I guess to check for leaks?) could this be the cause? Anyone else know 'bout this?

Otherwise it's great. It's got a nice mellow sound at idle and deep rumble but not too loud when driving around town. Can only hear it on the freeway if the radios off.

have you had any engine treatment or oil aditives put in lately? i know i can smell mine whenever i put something like prolong or engine restore. it smells like rotten eggs mixed with rotten cabage and dog crap.

im not sure what they would spray on the exhaust. when i had my flowmaster put on i stood there and bsed with the guy and he never sprayed anything on it.

if it is brand new it will smell funky for about a week... all the parts need to air out.... they do have chemicals on it.. like oil from production and things like that.... dont worry about.... just live with it...it will go away

That's what I figured. It's just hard doing my job being all spacy and whatnot!! I'm doing a long drive this afternoon and hopefully it'll help.

you should go mud boggin and give it a good mud bath.

And get my nice clean white Explorer dirty?!?! What kind of savage are you? Actually I wish I could (even though it's lowered and 2wd I still go play off road) but I'm in San Diego. I don't remember the last time we had rain, or mud for that matter. Oh well, sucks to be me!!

it smells like rotten eggs mixed with rotten cabage and dog crap.

Just out of curiosity, how do you know what rotten eggs mixed with rotten cabbage and dog crap smells like?

YetiX Great comment regarding recognizing the smell!! I surely got a laugh out of reading it!
Gabe, the hydrogen sulfide, rotten egg, cabbage smell is most likely caused by the engine exhaust gases entering the catalytic converter having too much unburned gasoline (i.e. running too rich) and there is insufficient oxygen to burn the gasoline vapors. The sulfur in the gasoline burns to SO2 or sulfur dioxide and then the catalytic converter changes (reduces) the SO2 to H2S using the hydrogen in the gasoline vapors. The bottom line is that the air/fuel ratio is most likely out of wack, possibly because of a sickly oxygen sensor in the exhaust pipe. Probably who ever installed the new Borla exhaust screwed up that oxygen sensor or sensors (there are sensors on the inlet and outlet of the catalytic converters on the newer vehicles). Are your windows up or down when you smell shiznit?

Yeti
My Borla system smelled pretty nasty for about a week. It vibratesa bit at idle too, I'm going to make sure everything's tight, but if anyone has some advice, I'd welcome it.

Taken from Martha Stewart's Home Living magazine:

Rotten Egg, Rotten Cabage, Dog Crap Casserole.

This can be a wonderfully exciting dish when served with white wine and caviar. The whole family will love this sinfully earthy decomposition celebrating the cycles of life.

Prep:
Place 6 eggs in a dish and let them sit outside for 8.5 days. Rap the cabage in plastic and put it in a gallon of water and let it sit outside for 5-6 days. Collect your favorite specimen of fecal matter.

Directions:
Mix the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Butter the bottom of your casserole dish and poor in ingredients. Top with your favorite Europen stinky cheese and sprinkle a little cinamon on top to sweeten the deal.

-----------

Thats how I know what rotten cabage, rotten eggs, and dog crap smell like. YetiX, I believe that martha stewart is to blame for all of your problems.
