stock 01 explorer, issue with the tach needle bouncing ????

while driving normally usually at hwy speeds.. my tach will start bouncing from 2200 to 3500, just fluttering away, then if i taake my foot off the gas , it will stop bouching... I need some direction on this please

I have the same problem, wish I had a solution for you!
 






My dads would jump up to 2,500-4,000 when it’s idling at the normal idle. Sometimes tapping it would bring it down to the normal range and would still be inaccurate. I do it sometimes when bored after the car is off. An answer would be nice lol, maybe I’ll be able to fix that.
 






I have had two Fords (one Mustang, one Mountaineer) do this over the years. I ended up replacing instrument cluster on both. Before replacing, I tried removing the instrument cluster and looking for broken solder connections, I cleaned and cleaned again all of the connections where the wiring plugs in the back of the cluster, no luck.
