I have a nice system in my explorer and at night when I have my A/C, headlights, and stereo on my volt meter goes real low. I was wondering if they make a larger direct replacement alternator for my explorer. I think my alternator is a 110 amp right now and I would like to have a 130 amp or higher. I was wondering if anyone knows of a alternator I could use without modifing my brakets? Does any one know of another way of keeping the power from dropping to low?
Thanks

Yeah try Mraltenator.com

I'm an alternator idiot. What does the 3 or 4g mean? Is that just the wire gauge that can connect to it or something?

I'm an alte-idiot as well...but just think of all the toys you could run off those 200 amp alternators! Dead Link Removed

Troll--Screw 100 and 130 alts. w/ your truck...It kicks enough ass to need a kick ass alternator...Go 175 to 200...
I got mine from:
http://www.mechman.com
No complaints here...Pricy yes...Wicked oh yea! I've got the 175 and alot of power for the system.....Just my 2 cents
Thanks,
Pete

P.S 4ga is how I normally have seen it written as...4 gague that is.

I got a 200amp alternator for MrAltenator for like $200. Man i can have all my lights turned on with my stereo turned up and my lights won't even flicker a little.

How long does it take them to rebuild your stock alternator for more power? I mean if you're sending it to them and having them send it back? It'd be nice to have the car with as little downtime as possible.

JTang-On mine, you get a whole new thing...So you're never out of one. I've got my original sitting in my garage for an emergency but my new one has been great for the year and a half that I had it...So there is no core exchange...And lemme tell ya, when ya look through the slots in the new one compared to the old one, man, that new one is beefy!

Alright, since one day I hope to have all this electronics stuff installed in my ride I'm also going to need a larger alternator. Has anyone here installed dual batteries and a split charging alternator? I was wondering if I do the air-box to cone air filter change if I could mount another battery tray under the hood. I mean, look at all the stuff I'm going to be running.

And thats just the stuff that comes to mind. Do you guys think 200 amps is enough?

Wuss... LOL. a 200 amp altenator should have no problem handling that, as long as you have a good battery and don't have all those thinks on at the same time... do you have the wattage levels of all those items? Simply add em up, divide by 12, and your good to go. For example, here's my list.

4 sets (8 lights) of PIAA 80 XT's at 120 watts each = 960 watts
1 set of PIAA 520s at 85 watts each = 170 watts
1 set of PIAA 1500s at 85 watts each = 170 watts
1 set of PIAA 80 rallys at 135 watts each = 270 watts
Warn winch, 4800 watts at full draw
speaker amplifier, 100x4 = 400 watts
pre-amped subwoofer, 150 watts

total of those aftermarket things at 6920 watts, approximately 576 amps. I have a 130 amp altenator and a 800 amp battery (working on getting my optima sponsorship completed so I can add another battery [a yellow top] to help balance the load). if I'm not using my winch, its instantly down to 176 amps. Assuming I'll never be using my winch while I have all my PIAA"s on, which cranking the stereo, I don't anticipate any problems. If however I tried to run all these things at once, I have no doubt that things would start getting damaged... even going to a 200-amp altenator wouldn't help all that much. I think adding a second altenator would be a great idea, but where the heck could you mount it?

Sorry Matt, not everyone has a HEAT SHIELDED paintjob to deal with all those lights :)

However, no one answered the real question. If I remove the Air-Box and replace it with a cone, will there be enough room for a second battery?

Twin Optima Yellow Tops. Oh yeah baby!!!
