Back story:
I've actually got a factory Explorer head unit in my Ranger. Don't know what year the Explorer was that I got it from. It has the am/fm/CD/cassette options. I got it because the face on my stock Ranger unit cracked and I didn't (still don't) have the money for aftermarket stuff, so I rocked the junkyard. It had two wire sets plugged into the back. My truck only has the main set of wires, so I assume the other set had to do with the controls in the back of the center console and whatever else... 6-disc changer maybe? I don't think it had an amp.

Problem:
I usually use the cassette player (leading to the mod idea below) with an adapter for my iPod, but the problem also occurs when the unit is off or playing the radio. Randomly the unit will switch from what it's playing, or turn itself on, to try and play a CD. Since I never have a CD in, it then switches to the radio. Anyone have an idea where this fault would occur? The button doesn't feel sticky or anything. Someone lost my tools that I need to get into the thing and check it out. I'm just wanting to know what to look for so I can repair it and keep using this unit. Any ideas will help.

Mod:
Initially I was going to just rewire the magnetic leads on the tape deck and run them to a 1/8" jack to use for an AUX input since I don't have tapes anymore. If I could use that other harness in the back of it to rig up an AUX input, I'd like to do that instead. Any ideas there?

Nothing?

I'll have to go buy another set of the screwdrivers to take it apart and see if there's anything corroded or flopping around loose then.

Over time the head unit just goes bad. It's electronics and anything could cause them to short and randomly malfunction. Instead of the spending money for the repair and buying tools. Just save for a new aftermarket radio. We give you the din tools when you purchase a radio with free installation gear. We currently have a JVC Digital Media (no CD, just USB and aux) for 79.99 with free install gear and shipping.

Vlad, that's not a bad looking unit. I really hate the way the Ranger/Explorer looks with those stupid DIN conversion adapters, but that receiver has the features I like, without anything extra I don't want, at a decent price. I could always fab up an adapter plate that doesn't look so cheesy later on. Now I'll have to upgrade the speakers...

I think I'll go for it and play around with my stock head unit when I have time. It's repairable. Electronics aren't all that complicated.

Thanks for posting that.

Got it installed. Pretty straightforward and easy. Now I've got time to tinker with the stock one, just for the heck of it.
