I have a 2000 ford explorer sport and it has no fog lights but the stock switch is there and I crawled underneath it and found the wires for the lights and I was wondering if I bought aftermarket lights could I splice them into the factory wiring or would I need some sort of relay for it

In order to get the most light out of the lights you buy you will should use a relay.
Just buy a light set w/relay and use the OEM wireing to activate the relay. This will simplify your install as you wont have to run wires through the firewall and will provide a full 14volts or so to the fogs.

Yup.

Wire the new lights up with a stand-alone harness and just use one of the stock fog power wires as the switch for the new relay.

Added benefit of this: no wires through the firewall.

i just cut the stock and used butt connectors to connect the wires to the new aftermarket fogs. they are 55W ones. there the same brightness as my headlights so it is a good match.

Where is the wire to the fog switch located to activate the relay? What color is it?

If you have the factory fog harness but no factory fogs, just use one of the power wires at the airdam. Each side will have a fog harness with 2 wires: power and ground behind the airdam or bumperl.
