Did the stock 1996 headlights come coated with that UV coating? Mine are beginning to have a very light yellow coloring. Don't know whether to treat them like the newer coated lenses with a headlight restoration kit, or is the plastic itself going bad?

you can use a restration kit on them, but the results won't last very long. new replacements are a much better way to go and they're not that expensive. check out RockAuto, Ebay and Amazon for prices (shipping is free on Amozon with Super Saver).

My 96 headlights look like new. I have had the truck for nearly two years, and they looked that way when I bought it. It is from Nebraska, and I don't know if it was garaged or not. I tried polishing them by hand a couple times and no change. I would restore them if it were me. I did a Dodge Intrepid and made a world of difference. But, changing them is no big deal either. Just don't know what quality plastic you will be getting. You know what you have now. A little bit of hand cleaning/polishing every few months should keep them clear. Just my opinion. If you decide to polish them, I recommend the 3M kit. $20 bucks and worth every penny.

I have used the 3M kit with incredible results!!

yeah, i've tried the restoration kits on other vehicles and my XLT. you get good results, but within a month or two, you have to do them again. and the better restoration kits aren't cheap. i saw a listing for 2 brand new headlamp assemblies for $55 (RockAuto or Ebay i think). my '01 EB lenses are original and still like new (always garaged) and my Mountaineer headlight lenses have been replaced, but my XLT, Voyager and Gran AM lenses are way yellowed. the sun does it.
