91 Explorer Sold-now a YJ
Does anyone have a suggestion for a blow subwoofer? Can I just replace the stock one or do I need a whole new unit? If anyone has a stock unit for sale let me know.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Still a newbie on car audio stuff.

Sorry to here that man! If you just wanna replace the factory sub, and no one on the boards here is selling one, try e-bay, I've seen 'em there for sale. If you want to upgrade it is possible to just replace with an aftermarket sub, someone on this site has done it and said it turned out pretty nice! Good luck man!

I was wondering the same thing. I can't find a good replacement,seems nobody makes a 6 1/2" sub. I have
a "98" Sport with the "Mach" system.I would like to
upgrade my sub (have done the other speakers).

6 1/2

Mine is blown also. I called the parts department at a Ford dealership for this speaker. Said they have 2 of them in stock and they sell for $60 each. Crutchfield doesn't have a replacement; I did read a comment here the other day where someone found one for $75 made by "Kicker", I believe at a stereo store.

I'm glad I'm not the only one in this situation. If anyone else has suggestions let me know. Is the switch from the old to the new 6 1/2 pretty simple?

JBL 6 1/2

Removing and replacing the speaker is straight forward (10 minutes), if you buy an original speaker from Ford. The speaker grille will pop out using a screwdriver at the top edge to gently lever it out...then remove the speaker, unplug the wires from speaker terminals. Plug the wires back in to the terminals of the new speaker (take care to match positive and negative correctly), reinstall speaker and grille, and your done.

I have the entire system sitting in my garage. Both amps and the sub in the enclosure. I took it out about three months ago and it was working absolutely flawlessly. Make if anyone want it make me an offer. I also have 4 premium speakers. (4inch midrange and 1 inch tweeter) Let me know. Oh it's out of a 93.

Well the new woofer is on order and it was a snap to get the old one out. Good thing for that set of Torq bits I had from my days of driving my old CJ7's.
Thanks again for the help.
By the way what is the amount of power going to the stock woofer in the 91 JBL system? Does anyone know what it is rated at?

Still the question remains, does anybody (besides Ford),
make a 6 1/2" woofer.Or can you order a 8" from Q-form
and use your existing sub amp. If there is a better
6 1/2" woofer out there, iwould like to upgrade.

Fritz,
There are many companies out there that make a very good 6 1/2" woofer to replace the crappy one that ford installed. I did alot of checking around and found that Kicker, Fosgate, Pyramid, and several other companies made a very good replacement. I'm on a budget right now so I went with a cheap Pyramid unit for $11. But it's better than nothing right now. The Kicker was $60-80 as well as the Fosgate. http://www.partsexpress.com has a pretty good selection of other types that are out there.
Good luck with the replacement..It's very simple to do.

I just got off the phone with the Kicker people.
They said i just can't change woofers.I would
have to change the amp as well.I said, i just want
to upgrade to a better 6 1/2 woofer, they told
me i whould still have to get a more powerful amp.
Sounds like a lot off $$$$ to me.

I have a factory Ford sub from a 92 EB that I'd sell for $40 including shipping if anyone is intested in the easy/cheap solution. But just so you know you can install a 10" sub with about an hours worth of work more. But that would require a better amp etc.

Did you check out the group purchase on JL Audio Stealth and Vantage boxes that we have going on? I wrote a post about it in the Explorer Audio forum. A 10" JL woofer is gonna give you the kind of thunder that a 6.5" can only dream about.

just trying to get enough people in on the group purchase to make it go through,

Andrew

Thanks for the response Quad, but I am hoping to put more money into my suspension and exterior upgrades at this time and not into the stereo. This is just a quick fix for the blown woofer. The new one sounds good enough for me right now.

Hey everybody. I would have to say that the best replacement for the factory 6.5 sub is the Kicker, unless you want to spend the big bucks on a custom box. You can get the Kickers(there are 2 different ones) at http://www.onlinecarstereo.com for $60. If you buy anything else, like an amp, purchases over $99 have free shipping.

Byrd,

Have you purchased from there before? How long was their wait. I was very dissatisfied with Sounddomain.com. Not only did they not give me the free shipping that I was supposed to get, they haven't sent all my parts yet, but they did charge me for it already, which I think is unprofessional. Furthermore, I've sent them e-mails and tried calling their 800 number to no avail.

Can i just take one woofer out and put the other one in ?.
Will the OEM amp have enough power ?. Or will i need a more
powerful amp ?.

Whether it will have ENOUGH power is a matter of taste and how effeciant your new sub will be. But without knowing any of these things I would guess that you will be unsatisfied with the stock sub amp. I was.

I was going to buy one of those 6.5 Kicker subs, and see
if i could get more bass. The OEM sub is ok,but i'm always
looking for something better. Maybe i'll get a new amp to.
Now, what kind of amp do i get ?.

Hi, new here,
this thread has been useful. My sub is blown.

If I want to just replace the sub.
are either one of these good options?
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=290-352
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=264-832

I see through the forum that the stock amp is 80 watts, is that peak or RMS?
I'm still getting to know car audio, but i know enough to get myself in trouble :) and I have some buddies who have done car audio so if i get into a jam I can ask them for help.

thanks!!!!
