I have a stock 1996 Explorer looking to upgrade. I'm bad with cars and no nothing about offroading and looking for some direction to start. Should I start with suspension? Tires / Wheels? What, need help and thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

Suspension is a great place to start. Lifting will allow for bigger tires. Depending on the size of the lift will determine the size of the tires.

Tires. Depending on what type of driving conditions will determine which tires to use. Mud, dirt, rock, street, or a combo of conditions.

Gearing the differentials for the larger tires will be one of the best mods you can do for performance.

Shocks & springs will let you enjoy your new ride and get max articulation with your lift.

Skid protection. Front, rockers (sides), and underneath, will help from damage.

Transmission, & T-case selection will give you the crawl ratio needed for climbing obstacles, and not over working your engine.

Bumpers. Front and rear modified for approach & decent angles, protection, tow points and winches. Also a place to hold the spare tire to get it out from underneath.

There are sub forums for each of these mentioned on this forum. Search & read till you find whats best for you.

Enjoy!

Wow man thanks for all that info. Do you have any good sites to order parts from? When I'm looking for suspension do I go all out or just get shocks or what? Just mentioning again I have no off road knowledge, or any real car knowledge at all.
