Are there any solid specs on the stock pushrod lengths/diameters/etc. for the 4.0L OHV?

Some info suggests a mean length of 5.480", but parts listings show 5.420" as the original size, with 5.450" and 5.480" as the oversize lengths.

Add to that there are different cams, but Ford only lists one replacement part # for their pushrod (but of course noone knows how long it is or has a new one to measure), so I'm assuming there was just one pushrod length for all 4.0 OHV motors.

I'm also curious if the stock rods are 5/16" or 3/8" diameter, since those who go with aftermarket rods seem to get either of these.

It doesn't seem to be possible to order aftermarket pushrods in "stock length" since noone knows what the stock length is, so I have to specify the length.

The factory service manuals list the dimensions and tolerances for everything else, but not the pushrods.

I guess I could always order just one stock rod and measure it...

the stock ones are 5.475 over all length.i have a set if you need anymore info.what are you trying to do?smith brothers makes a pushrod measure that would be you best bet,its only like $10.but if you replacing your rods its best to do the rocker arms also

I'm replacing my stock rocker assemblies with the newer ones from Ford to solve the common valvetrain noise issue, so I need new pushrods because the original ones are probably toast.

I haven't decided on which pushrods to get yet, but since custom 4130 cromo units with hardened tips are higher quality at similar cost to the OEM solid 1010 steel pushrods, I figure I'll go that route. Smith Bros. require a length to order, even when you just want their cromo rods with hardened tips made to the exact stock specs.

I realize Delta Camshaft has the D-40 kit with remanufactured rockers and the selected longer pushrods to go with it, but the revised assemblies and cromo rods is what I want to do.

good deal, yea my 92 stock ones was 5.475 give or take a little from wear so the 5.480 you saw probably is the new over all length.are the new rockers from ford redesigned at all?what's the differences?

The 5.475 is a measurement of your old, worn pushrod?

The new rockers are apparently revised to deal with the wear issue of the old design, which I assume means they just have hardened cups rather than the softer metal previously used. I don't think the stock pushrods were changed from the one piece steel design, though.
