New poster, new (to me) truck. My truck has the 6 disk changer and the factory sub. The kid I bought it from threw this H-Uinto the sale, uninstalled. Well I installed it the other day with no problems. Obviously, the rear radio controls, six disk changer, and sub don't work, but I'll get to that. I just wanted a unit I could plug my iPhone into.

Ok first, I don't care about the six disk changer or the rear controls. I found the sticky for the stock sub wiring so I'll probably tackle that today.

I'm not new to stereo installs, but I don't know much about actual systems.

1. What are the stock speaker sizes?
2. Is there one in each door plus the sub, or are there tweeters somewhere else?
3. With the stock sub and six disk, do I in fact have the premium system, and is it Mach or JBL, or are those one in the same?

Next - upgrades. I'm not a fan of the 5000 watts of killer bass. Hey, everyone has their thing, it's just not mine. I'd rather have a quality audiophile system, like the Bose system in the Cadillacs or the 12 speaker Alpine system in my old Lincoln. I would like someone with some savvy to go to Dead Link Removed and tell me what would be the best setup, preferably below $400, in my truck. I know these are good systems, I had one in my Jeep installed by the previous owner and it was amazing. I don't care about the back seat people, I just want to have premium quality sound that blows people away with clarity and sound reproduction.

Or, if someone has a better idea, maybe a total system off the shelf that is a better deal, throw it out there. Thanks,
John

Eh... should have kept reading sticky's. Found the first information I wanted.

Wow - I love solving my own problems before anyone else does. Initially, when I removed the stock unit the only molex connector I saw was the wiring harness that plugged into the aftermarket harness. Even though there are two other connections on the back of the stock unit, I didn't think anything of it; I just assumed I had a less-than-premium audio system with components that weren't installed and therefore weren't connected to the stock unit.

When I realized I had the Mach-JBL system, I pulled my aftermarket HU out and got to looking back up in there and realized my other two molex connectors for the stock unit were jammed way back behind the hvac controls. Pulled them out, reconnected the stock unit, and whammo... I've got a decent system. And steering wheel controls (which I thought the switches were dead) and rear controls, and a cd changer. Granted, I still don't really care too much about that stuff, but the point is my stock system sounds far better than I ever thought it would.

Only one problem... the stock sub is on its last leg. Got some vibration and clarity is sub-par. What is the best one to replace it; something that the stock amp can push - I don't need something big.

I'd still like to know what someone with some savvy thinks about the best setup from the site above.

Thanks all.

John

Since you've got everything working, your best bet is to find a set of four 6x8 speakers to replace the stockers, and then replace the sub with an aftermarket 8" driver.

If you want audiophile sound, you'll probably want to get seperates rather than just replacement 6x8's. you can get adapter plates that let the mid and tweeter of a 5.25" system fit into the stock 6x8 speaker location. If that's too much trouble, you can get 3-way 6x8 Pioneers at walmart for $60/pair. If you like the sound of the stock JBL/Mach speakers, just move on to the sub.

JL audio makes a replacement, the 8W0, which will work great with the stock amp. You can get a few other brand name 8" subs that handle about 100W RMS which will also be fine with the stock amp and cost a little bit less.

Ok here's what I've got so far; if I decided to revamp the system. Keep in mind that I don't know too much more than the basics of car stereo, except installs, I know that pretty well.

Amp
104W RMS X 4 Car Amplifier

Sub
8" 4-ohm Component Subwoofer

Speakers
5"x7"/6"x8" 2-way Component Speakers - Just for the front. I'll mount the tweeters probably on the dash corners.

EQ
9-Band Equalizer - Since I'm sticking with the stock H/U and prefer more than "Bass and Treble"

And of course the iPod hookup in the back.

Give me some feedback folks. If these products aren't matching up; or if this amp won't drive the sub when bridged, or whatever... give me a heads up.

Wow... just added everything up. Thats a grand. Damn...
