Guys,

I did a few searches and couldn't find anything so I had to make this new thread. Sorry.

I want to replace the stock Subwoofer in my X and maybe even the enclosure but don't know how to do this without wrecking stuff.

Can someone help me out please?

Do I have to remove the entire plastic panels surrounding it? What's the best tool to use to pry off the plastic plugs is this is so?

Thanks.

The panel does have to come off. You will need a panel tool to get the panel off. I got mine from Crutchfield. For replacement subs look into getting a JL Stealthbox or Vantage, MTX Thunderform, or Q-Logic Custom.

Thanks for the reply 03ExplorerSPT!

Much appreciated!

If you just want to replace the sub speaker, then you don't have to take the whole quarter panel off. Just pry out the METAL, NOT the plastic grill. Then the sub is right in front of you.

But if you want to take the whole enclosure out, then you have to take the whole quarter panel out.

Cool 96explorereddiebauer,

I just want to get access to the sub. What metal are you talking about? I think my grill over the sub is just plastic cover matching the rest of the panel though.

I'll have to take a closer look tonight.

Thanks man.

It's the mesh metal grill I'm talking about. Just pry it from the top out. Remember, not the plastic panel I'm talking about here.

the 98+ sub enclosure doesn't have the metal grille that the earlier ones have; it is all plastic. Have you replaced the sub yet? I am interested in doing the same thing.

Hi Justin,

No I have not yet. I haven't had the time to screw around with the plastic panels. I'd rather buy the tool needed to remove the plastic plugs than try to pry them off and wreck them. Hopefully within the next few months I'll do it. I have the sub already and an amp but no time.

Cheers.

I will be doing mine next week. I am going to use the stock amp and probably an MTX 4000 series sub. I need to know what impedence the factory sub is. You dont need a tool to get the panel off. On my old Explorer, I just pulled along the edge of the panel and the plugs pulled right out. I didn't damage any of them.

sor118: You can pick up the interior panel removal tool at Canadian Tire for around $10.00

just take off the quarter panel. It is a LOT easier to work if the panel is off. I've taken mine off probably 10-15 times and reused the plastic screws everytime. All you need is a size 50 Torx bit for the seatbelt and a a small bit (can't remember size) to take off the coat hanger hook, which is over the passenger's side rear door. Then just start pulling. Start where the panel meets the cieling. The plastic panel in my opinion will support the plastic screw a lot more then any tool will when pulling it out. If you use some common sense when pulling everything out (try to pull straight out and not at an angle) you wont break anything. Once you get to the bottom, there MIGHT be screws holding it to the body... usually not though. These are underneath the carpet at the base of the plastic panel.

You cannot replace the factory sub + box in the same location as the stock one UNLESS you have a new headunit. The reason for this, is that the factory speaker amps + stock sub amp are mounted back there as well. Unless you want to hack up the stock mounting piece to fit the aftermarket sub, you should seriously consider a new head unit.

Hope this helps.

hey guys. the seams failed on my stock sub. i wanna replace it with a higher output one. which of the following are the best in ur opinion:JL Stealthbox or Vantage, MTX Thunderform, or Q-Logic Custom.

i spoke with a local accessory place about the MTX. they recommended that i get the unamplified version of it and get a better amp to get the msot out of the sub. any help here is appreciated. thanks alot.

just a general question about removing the trim panels:

do you just need to use a screwdriver to pry out those little pins and pull it off, or do you need some kind of special tool?

thanks

screwdriver = big no no

Does anyone know the impedence or mounting depth of the stock sub?
