I have a 1993 XLT with 150k miles on it. Until about a week ago, it has been absolutely great - I haven't had any problems to speak of - I do the normal maintenance and it just keeps on going. Anyway, about a week ago I started having an odd transmission problem. The engine revs up higher than normal (sometimes between 1500 to about 2000 rpm) before the trans engaged into 1st gear. The problem only seemed to happen during the 1st 5 minutes of driving and after 1st gear, everything has been fine. Naturally, the first thing I did was check the fluid and it was very low, so I added some - and the problem went away for a couple of days. Now I have to add about 6oz. every 2 to 3 days. I have checked for a puddle under my Explorer before I start it each time, but I never find one. Maybe there is a leak, but it must only leak when it's in gear. Also, when I check the trans fluid, it appears to be less slick and less red than normal. Someone has suggested to me that the radiator may be the problem, leaking antifreeze into the transmission - could this happen? If it is the radiator, it appears to be easy enough to change myself (I've done it before on other vehicles), but I'd hate to go through the trouble and not fix the problem. Luckily, I've only had to drive about 15 miles a day lately. If you could post any suggestions or similar experiences I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Hey guy,
The only way it could be the radiator is if you have a tranny cooler on your rig that runs into the radiator. You will see 2 metal pressure lines - 1 high and the other on the low side - under the radiator cap. The other possibility is the start of a main seal leak. That seal is a pressure seal and is more likely to not show signs of a leak until it is totally gone (then everything empties in a matter of seconds). I would have a TRUSTED mechanic look at it. If it is the radiator - and he/she is honest - do the job yourself. If it a tranny seal, pay to have it done. In either case, get the problem checked pronto. I good rebuild on that tranny is either side of 2k....

Thanks for the tips.

I do have a factory trans cooler, it appears to be plumbed in series with the radiator.

If you have any more tips/suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.
