Hi I have a 96 explorer sport 4x4 that has a high pitched chirp coming from under the drivers side. At first I thought it may be the wheel but now Im thinking it may be the driveline. Its hard to diagnose because it only makes this chirp while driving at 10 or 15 mph. At higher speeds its gone... Anyone with ideas where I should look next?

stick [manual] or auto trany?

maybe your brakes?

check your u-joints. Also if it's a manual, it can be your throw out bearing or another bearing inside your transmission. Good luck

Thanks for the help!

IZwack, your post in your link sounds identical to my problem so now I can get to finding which u joint is bad now. From what I can tell by listening its right underneith me as I drive...I really appreciate the help guys!
Thank you to dmb and izwack

i believe the 95 and 96s came with the double cardan u-joint at the front drive shaft's transfer case end... if u dunno what a couble cardan drive shaft looks like, it looks like this:

as you can see there are two u-joints on this end.. there is another u-joint at the other end of the drive shaft too.

Hey thanks for that great pic. I got under the x today after work and it sounds like its coming from the transfer case shaft in to the tranny thats making the noise. ive never replaced a u joint before so if you have any tips please feel free to share any. i have the shop book so ill study up on it before taking anything apart.
