Hi guys and gals,

Just a quick question, I recently used the Ex for towing across a field, so popped it into 4hi as it was a bit wet and slippy.

While driving I noticed that if I turned the wheel then there would be a what can only be described as a graoning/clunking type noise.

I've had other part time 4x4 trucks and have never had this sound before, does it sound terminal or should it normally sound like that??

Any help would be great

Cheers

Sounds like you experienced wind up. I guess it was not slippery enough. The explorer does not have a central diff so when you go around a bend the front axles turn at different speeds to the rear. The noise you heard was the wheel jumping to relieve the stress.

was you on tarmac or grass? i sometimes use the all 4wd when its raining or really wet as i cant trust power sliding out every corner lol, but yes theres no center diff so the stress is put through one of the wheels.

4wd is not really good to use on tarmac- you could wreck the transfer unit. just leave it in normal mode and you should be fine.
