Hello!

I’ve got a 99 xlt 4x4 w/a TT & shackles, with a strange whining coming from the left front. It starts, sometimes with a click at about 1-3 MPH & cuts out, sometimes with a click under that. It’s a whirring sound (think big mosquito) like the brakes are rubbing, but they’re not. The strange thing is, it stays at the same pitch & doesn’t speed up as the truck goes faster… I can only hear it till about 10 MPH, because the tires (MT’s) start to hum & drown it out. At first it was only every now & then, but now, it’s pretty constant. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Dirt/sand get behind the dust boot cover? "98-99 ex's had issues with dust boot covers and hub seals. Would whine/squeal from start to 15-20MPH in cold weather.

Chris,

It's been my experience that the CV joints make a pretty loud clunking noise (esp. while turning) when they're about to give up the ghost. But, it wouldn't hurt to check the boots (to make sure they're not punctured) while you're there.

Dave.
