I went to open my 98' Explorer XLT today using the keypad, upon entering my code the locks began to make a strange, repetitive sound. It was as if the car was trying to unlock, but remained locked. It continued to make a some sort of extended clicking sound, and would not stop. I was able to use my key to manually unlock my door. Here's where I stand:
-The noise comes from all the doors.
-The doors continue to make that sound even when the car is unlocked and being driven.
-With the right combination of doors locked or unlocked I can temporarily stop the relentless attemps of the car to "unlock" even when I have not pressed the unlock button.
-The button on the doors do not work to unlock or lock the car either.
-When I stop the car and push the locks down by hand, 9/10 times the noise begins and I am left with no other choice but to leave the car as it continues to attempt to unlock.
-The rear gate is locked, and now the key does not even turn manually in the rear gate with all the fanagling help in the world
-Soon after I noticed that I couldn't even open the driver's side door manually without jiggling the key and trying for a few seconds.
As a temporary fix, can someone tell me what fuse to pull so I dont have to listen to my car continually make that noise, or leave it unattended drawing attention by clearly displaying a problem with the locks?
What can I do for a real fix?
Thank you!
p.s. I've only had the car for a few months, is the automatic locking system supposed to unlock the rear gate? I've always had to use the key to lock and unlock the rear gate, but now seeing this problem I thought perhaps I recieved the car already on it's way to a locking mechanism problem. Or does everyone need to use their key to unlock the trunk?
