BUMP WITH NEW INFO AND RECURRING PROBELEM

The 92 Explorer that was my dad's since new has an unusual problem with the radio and I THINK with the 4x4 controls. I don't drive it very often as it is our 4th vehicle. When I do, for about the first 15 minutes, the radio doesn't work. It has a faint background light in the display, but not display of the time or station and of course no sound. Hitting the power button has no effect. Then it just suddenly comes on and works perfectly for the rest of the day. If I drive it a few days in a row, the problem does not occur. But then when I let it sit for several days to a couple of weeks, the problem returns. Station pre-sets are NOT lost, BTW.

When we had some snow, of course I wanted to drive it. When I would hit the 4WD button, I could hear the gear in the back clicking on, but the dash light would not light. Some time later, I noticed the light WAS on. I THINK these two issues have the same cause (but I cannot be certain that the 4WD light only works when the radio is working).

So...any thoughts? I was thinking that maybe there is a loose/weak connection in the wireing somewhere that only starts working when the truck warms up. I've only noticed this since Fall, so I can't say whether or not this is actually TEMPERATURE related.

Had the same problem, finally replaced the radio and bypassed the amp (located behind the trim panel on the passenger side cargo area). I don't know whether the radio or the amp was fubar.

Bringing this back to the top. Having it still. I've been driving it more lately as I'm selling two of my other cars. I previously thought maybe it had something to do with the cold becasue it only started happening during the winter last year. Now, not so cold.

Last week, though, we DID get some rain! Then on Wed and Thu when I drove it I had no radio until almost to work 30 miles later. So now I'm thinking that it is likely WATER related. Maybe there's a relay or power junction that is getting wet when it rains (car parked) and it doesn't work until it dries out. Is there a power relay for the "ignition on" power leads to the radio? Any clues where to look when I go seeking this gremlin?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Rob
