I have a 91 Ford Explorer 2wd Eddie Bauer....

Strong smell of gas coming inside the vehicle. You can smell it pretty strongly on the passenger side of the vehicle as well. No noticeable gas dripping or loss of gas.

I have no idea where to start to look to try to find out where its coming from????:(

Any ideas appreciated!!!!
Thanks!
Kimberly

If you do not see any fuel leaks at the tank, lines, or fuel filter , check under the hood on the drivers side to see if the hoses to the vapor cannister (black plascic box) are split or disconnected. If all looks ok, the cannister may be fuel contaminated and venting the vapors to the atmosphere. The cannister is designed to store the vapors from the fuel tank until they can be burned in the engine.A non-functioning cannister purge valve can also lead to a cannister failure by not allowing the vapors to be burned by the engine. The purge valve is controlled by the engine computer.

If you can smell gas near the rear of the vehicle it's probably the fuel tank. If it's near the front check the things mentioned above.

The purge valves do go bad. To check it you'll need a wiring harness off one from a junk yard. Might as well grab a purge valve to. Remove the hoses and the valve as one assembly. The barbs will break off the purge valves. Pull your valve out with all the hoses attached. Plug your new harness in(leave the wires long when you cut it) put 12 volts across it. It should open and you should be able to blow through it. If not, it's bad. Test your junk yard model to. I just got a non-working one as a backup.
