well, ive been stuck in 4 wheel drive sense about mid winter. horrible gas mialage. when i turn the dial the light lights up like it is just engaged in 4 wheel and then i drive a bit then i stop and put it in N and put it back to 2 wheel and the lights go off but it is still in 4 wheel drive. i have tryed driveing in reverse and all that. i really dont want to take it to the ford dealer. is there anything i can do? could i try to mess with the hubs or something? i cant afford manual hubs right now so getting new ones is out of the question. any replies and suggestions to help me would be gladly taken

Check the shift motor on your tranfer case. Also I think I heard someone say their started workin after they disconnected the battery.

where is the shift motor located at? the battery was just disconected the other day

it is on the beck of the transfer case.

Having similar problems

Mine will engage by itself driving down the road or just parked in the carport. I can get it to disengage by shifting to 4LO then back to AUTO while in nuetral with truck running or just key turned on. I plan on taking a look at the shift motor but I've never really messed with any 4X4 parts of a vehicle yet, only motors, brakes, suspensions, etc. So I don't know my way around that t/c well, and I'm not sure exactly how the front axle plays into how the 4wd engages.
Did you find the problem with yours engaging? Any info would be a big help.
