My 97 XLT's stuck in 4WD low. I can pull the fuse and disable the 4WD system and that will actually let me drive it normally. However, whenever I put the fuse back in, it automatically is in 4WD low regardless of the switch position. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a 4wd computer problem or a short somewhere in the circuit.

BTW -- an SOA-ed Explorer in DC -- hehe that must be some sight! :D Where in DC are you?

Yeah I get quite a few looks (especially from other ford owners). Officaly I live in SE @ my mom's house, but I live over in the college park area while I'm in school.
My cousin had a similar problem in his suburban, and his mechanic replaced his transfer module. I'm just trying to see if anyone else had this happen and there's just something I can reset or change to fix it.
And if that's your explorer in your icon we need to do some talking cuz my front end is about 4 inches lower than the back and I need to figure out how to put the coil springs in there. Thanks for the help.

You are one of the few with a true shift motor problem. A new shift motor *should* fix the problem, unless the GEM is toast.

Another possibility is the shift relay... There are two of them, so you may want to check the pins at the relay block to see if the GEM is triggering it.

I have to pump the brakes while in neutral sometimes to get mine to disengage because my brake switch is messed up. Give that a try.
