stuck in 4X4

Hi all , hopefully someone will be able to answer my ? and maybe put me on the right track, long story short i have a 97 explorer, obviously stuck in 4X4high, will switch to 4 low and back to 4 high but will not come out of 4X4, please any help would be greatly appreciated, was gonna rip er apart but maybe someone out there knows of a better way, tnx

try putting it in neutral, then doing the switch. dont know if you did that or not, but that should do it. if it doesnt, then i'm out of ideas. but theres lots of smart people on this board.
