Stupid Clutch

Here is the deal, my 94 5 speed likes to smoke the clutch. Clutch is only 2 months old. Original clutch lasted 300,000 but it was a pavement princess. I had the clutch replaced. Did a little mountain driving and got stuck. smoked it until it blew out. Clutch #3, if i am stuck and trying to get out in 4 high it will smoke. 4 lo seems to handle just fine. 4 hi also works great for ice snow or just light trails but the moments things get a little nasty she smokes. Both where OEM standards. our local auto supply did not have any heavy duty aftermarkets. Suggestions for WHEN i again get stuck and forget to go into lo and burn it up?

Your stock clutch lasted 300K, but clutch #2 only lasted 2 months? (have you been teaching people how to drive stick?)
What kind of clutch did you put in?
Was it an OEM clutch or an OEM equivalent from an autoparts store?

yes the stock was from previous owners. The second actually only lasted a day. I picked it up from the shop the same day i was going camping in the mountains. Blew out when i got stuck up there. The shop replaced the clutch free of charge because they assumed it was either defected or improperly installed. The third started to act the same last time i got stuck until i went into 4 lo.

My clutch lasted 200,816 (when I finally replaced it). I installed an ebay "HD" replacement. I have put almost 9k hard city miles on it (pizza delivery), no issues. The clutch cost me $75 shipped (I haggled on shipping) stiffer pedal so traffic lights/ heavy stop and go are a neutral sitting vs leaving in gear.

My factory clutch disc was worn down to the rivets (would barely pull a hill in 2nd gear).

Well, I dont need a wikipedia quote to know what OEM means.

For the record OEM standard refers to an aftermarket OEM spec clutch. By what you wrote (quoted below), you had a shop install an aftermarket "stock" clutch. Most aftermarket stock clutches are usually not even as good as the factory clutch, let alone able to put up with the abuses seen offroad. What brand clutch was installed?

I had the clutch replaced. Both where OEM standards. our local auto supply did not have any heavy duty aftermarkets.

Now, as far as good clutches. I run a Center Force Dual Friction. It doesnt slip. I've heard good things about Luk gold series, never ran one.

What I was getting at was, how many of those 300,000 miles did you personally put on it?
I'm thinking you bought it with 299,900 on it, and you're hard on clutches...
 






Buy a decent clutch. A spec, luk, or a HD centerforce.

^-- what he said.... especially the slave cylinder part.

I'm not 100% on what brand my clutch is, but it was the same size as the old one, every detail was spot on (I only used the pressure plate, and clutch disc only because the new ford slave cylinder came with a throw out bearing already attached).

All I can tell you is my new clutch is stiffer than the original, and it definitely works a lot better than the old one.

Did you reface the flywheel? When we replaced clutches in our tractors you could bet on the one that did not have the fly wheel redone to let go early. Also most clutches rely on centrifugal force to hold. So stiffer springs at low RPM are neccessary. We have had just about everything you could imagine happen. Once a new clutch the springs cracked and it let loose on a 70 hp diesel. Good luck.
 






To state the obvious, clutch is a combination of the flywheel surface, the clutch plate, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, slave and master cylinders, and maybe the trans input shaft, I don't know this clutch that well. But, I know clutches, having done many a half-a@@ clutch job in my day. To get it right, all of this needs to be right.

i misread your first post. thought you where asking what OEM meant. Before i noticed i answered a question you did not ask you decided snap back.

as for the clutch. Yes OEM standards is what i was told, they also replaced slave master and had the flywheel resurfaced. I asked them do to the entire system. My dilemma is wanted a heavier duty clutch and was looking for opinions on it. 4 hi while buried in ruts is just to much for an OEM spec clutch i think..
