Hey Guys, Nother Stupid Question!

I stop by the junkyard after work today to pull the front leafs off a Waggy that they have there. So, to start, I had already put in my 8 hours, so I was already a little tired from the get go. Of course, the first thing I realize is that I need a 1/2 drive deep 7/8 to fit on the u-bolts nuts...........guess which socket is missing out of my toolbag? Quick trip to NAPA and I am back. Spray all the nuts down with WD40 and I start cranking. Now remember, this Jeep is prolly 25 years old and has been sitting in a junkyard. The 8 u-bolt nuts become the main obstacle. After QUITE awhile of spraying, grunting, and groaning, the nuts are off. This is quickly followed by the removal of the bolts/nuts on the front shackles. Now to the rear leaf mounts. I remove the nuts.........then BAM, I hit a wall!! The bolts simply won't come out. I force the bolts to turn with a socket, but they won't begin to come out. I hear someone banging something a couple of rows over, so I head over and borrow his 2-2.5lb sledge. I start WHALING on these bolts; nothing! By this time, I am over it!! I pack up and head out, empty handed and feeling like a total moron!

So, before I head out tommorrow to try to get these *******s off, what advice do you have? My first thought was cutting the bolt, but I don't have a cordless sawzall, and actually cutting it won't help the problem. My next thought is a chizel wedged between the bolt head and the bracket to hopefully force the thing to move a little.

So, how bout it? Remember, I will be in the middle of a junkyard with no means of anything electric or pneumatic, just hand tools.

This is my sad attempt with Paint with what I am dealing with.

Don't know how much help I can give except DON"T PULL TOWARDS YOUR FACE!! You can loose a tooth like that. (don't ask why I know:D )

Maybe, you could do like the old dentist trick. get some strong wire and wrap it around the head then attach the other to you hitch, and voila!:D

Ok, that sounds really lame.

How are the brackets attched to the frame? Welds, or bolts? Mabye you can knock the brackets off the frame above where you are having trouble with...

I looked at how the brackets were attached quickly. From the bottom, all I could see were round heads. They could have been carriage bolts or big ol rivets, doubt if they were welded. The inside of the frame didn't look easy to access.

At this point, it is a personal battle between myself and these two bolts (which they have no nuts so this is sad). At this point, they are pretty much "pegs". I brought out the big guns (big sledge), now I just need to out-smart them.:D

It is normal to start personal battles with inanimate objects?

take one of those nifty little propane torches out there with you and heat those suckers up and then beat the snot out'em. some times it works some times it dont. hoep it helps.

Burn em

Can you get an Acetelyne torch? Burn em at the mounts take them home and use a press. Or burn out the bushing (carefully so the spring isnt heated too much)

A big C-clamp use it like a press on the vehicle with a socket that fits over the bolt head. Spray it well first. Although I doubt this will work- the

The metal liner in the bushing is rusted to the bolt if you can cut the bolt on both sides of the spring you can at least get it to a bench where you can remove the bushing.
If an 8lb sledge wont budge it I think cutting either the mount off, or cutting the bolt so you can get the spring out of the vehicle and to a place to remove the bushing.

Good Luck
