Hi,

Im new to the club and i appreciate all the help. I have a 94 Explorer Limited with the JBL Audio System. The subwoofer is going out i think, its sounding pretty bad and the HU is acting crazy, keeps trying to feed or insert a cd after i take one out, does this most of the time. Can i just hook up a new 6.5 sub from crutchfield into the factory sub amp or do i have to get one thats exactly the same. Or should i just replace the HU and bypass the sub and amp. Now i've hear that there are two amps back there. When you get get the bypass kit from crutchfield does it bypass both?

Thanks,
Carlos

hey

You dont have to get a Sub that is Exactly the same. If you have the money then go for a new HU and a sub. It will give you some improvment with your factory speakers. I dont know for sure but, I would think that the bypass would only bypass the amp for your door speakers. Then in the future you can replace your door speakers with some nicer ones.

It bypasses the amp completely to my recollection. If i were you I'd power the new sub off a new amp, and run the speakers of the HU, you should be able to do this fairly inexpensively if you shop around.

The bypass kit only bypasses the door speaker amp. The sub amp is left along. Yes, if you buy a 6.5" sub from crutchfield, it will fit in, and yes, the factory amp is plenty for a 6.5 sub. If you were happy with the way the factory system sounded, go this route. A new sub should make the bass sound a bit better. If you want more sound, it will cost you a bit more.

If i just replace the sub, and just put it in the factory box and use the factory amp, what kind of 6.5 sub do i have to get, does it have to be a certain Ohm or anything. Is is pretty easy to connect, ive never done it before.

Thanks,
Carlos

Well nobody really makes a 6 1/2" sub. Why not just get amplified thunderform and put it back there.
