1998 Ford Explorer XLT V6
Hey guys thinking of putting a sub in my ex but don't want a huge box behind the back seats. I'm only looking for a little bass so I"m thinking one 8 or 10. My Ex is an XLT so it didn't come with at factory sub. Have guys put an after market sub in the cubby where the EB and Limited's have a factory sub? Is another possibility under the front passenger seat?

You can install a factory box back there, or there is an aftermarket company who will sell one for there. If you go factory, make sure you get the 8" box. I believe that was somewhere around 1997 they went from 6.5 to 8". But I'm not sure on those dates. I would use the factory amp too as it will provide you with enough power for what you are looking for. I'm very happy with my factory amp, box, and JL Audio sub.

Oh yea...I think you'll need the grill cover too.

So excuse my lack of speaker knowledge but is the XLT pre wired for all this and is there a factory amp or would I have to get an amp, enclosure/box , sub and wiring? I still have the stock deck but will be replacing it soon.

I just did this with my truck, and it wasn't too hard. I have a single 10" and it sounds great, much better than stock.

There are a few companies that make enclosures that fit where the factory sub would go. Two I know of are q-logic and MTX. I tracked down a MTX Thunderform enclosure on craigslist after looking for a month or so. You can purchase a box + sub for ~240 on ebay or just look for a good deal on a used one.

I then installed an amp under the rear passenger seat. Running wires from the head unit was not bad at all. There are little pieces of plastic trim that pop right off along the edge of the door on the bottom, and under there there is a channel to run the power and remote turn on/RCA cables. I ran the power cable on the drivers side and the other two on the passenger side. The cables ran to under the seat where I hooked up my amp. There also is a couple grounding points there too, so it is a nice spot.

I would recommend getting an aftermarket head unit with RCA outputs on the back. It will make it sound a lot better, and will work better (in my opinion).

To install the sub, you will have to remove the passenger side panel, but there are step-by-step directions in the owner's manual for it. It lists all of the tools and everything.

To get the manual go Here and on the left hand side down a little bit there is a link that says download it.

If you have any other questions, I may be able to help you.

MTX is good stuff...but you will still need an amp. And quite honestly, for what you are describing you want, it's overkill. Just find a used factory sub, box and amp and wire it in. I've seen the whole things on ebay for under $100. Wrecking yard would probably be less.

got mine at a salvage yard for 35, enclosure + sub $20 extra if I wanted the amp...

I like the wrecking yard idea. When I get a chance, I'll go browse around. Thanks guys

The enclosure I got was $12 from the junkyard. The charge was for the two OEM amps that were still attached to it.
