I have seen people with two subs facing each other together, kinda like a clamshell. What is the reason for this? better sound or just a different look?

That's called an isobaric setup. This setup usually saves space. It usually provides more bump but a little less clarity. isobaric setups function like a single woofer double the diameter (decent rule of thumb): 2 10s work like a single 20" with this setup.

I had an isobaric 10" setup and liked it. They were crappy subs but the isobaric setup made them sound better and take up less space. Now though I have the same power going to a single high quality 8" and it sounds clearer and louder.
