2002 Explorer with 6 disk CD changer.

After reading some of the trouble posts, I decided to pull the 6 CD changer out and see if there was something I could find wrong (broken belt, burned parts board etc.).

The first step was to remove the face plate to access the holding screws. I tried to pry it apart, but having not done this before, I chickened out (didn't want to crack it) and took it down to a car stereo shop. Took them about 5 minutes, and they took my $25.

The posts explaining how to remove the unit weren't too explanatory. There are 6 fasteners. They are located in each corner of the face plate plus one on each side (between the top and bottom fasteners).

Once the face plate was removed, there are two 7mm screws. The unit will then slide out far enough for you to remove the three electrical plugs and the antenna plug.

Once the unit was removed, I inspected and couldn't find any visual damage.
I decided to have the unit repaired and found a company on eBay. I removed the CD changer from the radio unit, there are four screws that hold the CD unit onto the radio chassis. Careful, after removing the unit, there is a micro plug wire and a ribbon connector to unhook.

I contacted Rive Automotive Electronics at 925-513-0021. Their phone number was listed on the auction and I called them. They are located in the San Francisco Bay Area. I went outside eBay (me bad!) and shipped them my unit via UPS ground from Los Angeles on a Monday (about $6 via UPS). It arrived two days later on a Wednesday. They called me on Thursday and said it was done. I called them back, gave them my cc number and they shipped it the same day (Thursday).

It arrived today and took me 10 minutes to put it back together and install it.
The repair cost was $80 plus $15 shipping and handling. The wife is very pleased to have the unit back and I'm very happy with their service and turnaround. I really didn't want to tear up the dash and install an aftermarket unit. My wife is a bit hard of hearing and a new stereo would not be appreciated for its audio.

BTW this is the same CD unit found in Honda's, Toyota's, Fords and some GM vehicles. I also want to add that the packaging on the return shipment was outstanding and there were two little bent plastic gizmo's that apparently hold the CD intact during transport. ++++++ on the packaging!

Congrats on the fix.

I really didn't want to tear up the dash and install an aftermarket unit.

Just for future reference, if you order through Crutchfield they send you all that is needed to install the H.U.. It is very simple with what they send you. Also it would probably be better sound quality for your wife.

It doesn't matter. Just thought I'd let you know.

Congrats, again!
