What's the scoop on pulling off the neg. battery cable once or twice a year too reset the computer?

What's the advantage? or is this bull!
Has any one else heard of this?
If this practice does have merit, how do you do it?

Why would the computer get "un-set"?

Here's the poop out of Chilton's...
The Keep Alive Memory (KAM) contains the adaptive factors used by the processor to compensate for component tolerances and wear. It should not be routinely cleared during diagnosis. If an emissions related component is replaced during repair, the KAM must be cleared. Failure to clear the KAM may cause severe driveability problems since the correction factor for the old component will be applied to the new component.

If you are going to pull the negative cable from the battery to reset the computer, Paul Gagnon echoed, in an earlier thread, to, "Just pull out the blue 60 amp fuse under the hood for a few minutes, it is easier than disconnecting the battery." I am repeating it because I agree with him, and it is what I do as well.

I don't think "screw things up" is what would really occur. Follow my thought: If all is functioning well before you replace the battery, when you remove the battery the KAM might get erased, but the resultant resetting of the computer will put everything back to the way it was before you replaced the battery. I don't believe it would cause any problems.

JR,
Brian is correct as long as you don't take too much time replacing the battery(less than 2 minutes). The setting will be the same as before you disconnected the battery, If the KAM does not get reset.Anything more than that will result in the computer's memory being erased and going back to default values that are set at the factory.not what the computer learned from your driving habits. When I did a rest on my computer, on my 95, after changing to a K&N filter. I initally got sort of a bad responce. ie. Bad gas milage,not as smooth as it was. etc,etc. It took about a tank full and about 300miles for the computer to relearn my habits. then it was fine after that. It did not take near as long on my 97. But it does take a little bit of time for your computer to relearn your habits. So no it "won't screw things up".

So, would you need to reset the computer after putting on a borla cat back? Or is that to far back to make a difference.

Since the cat-back exhaust is an emissions related component, I would reset it.
