I thought for awhile i would keep this secret to my self, but what the hell. I'am sure you real 4x4 junkies have read about the new tera flex shakles for jeeps. Well you probaly already guessed it, it works on your older X rear leaf springs, and all i can say is wow. I got 10 more inchs of travel in my rear and loss nor gained any lift. You will need three things to make this work.
1. the RJY tera flex shackle-$140
2. A add a leaf kit (get the long one it will give that extra inch travel)-$80
3. you will then need a rear brake cable extention-$30
I will hopefuly have some pics for you guys in the near future. I you have any questions send me a thread, and i will answer as soon as i can.

Rock On,
Jason

What do you need the add-a-leaf for?

When you put the new shakle on you lose about 1 1/4inch, the leaf just makes up for the loss and gives a little more travel.

Are these basically the Revolver shackles? I wasn't aware that you would lose any lift from putting those on. Is this just the lift that you would lose in relation to the Warrior shackles? If you do lose lift, then I would rather go with the teraflex shackles and OME springs, which would give back 2 inches. Plus, they flex better. Add-a-leafs aren't known for their flexability.

Jason -

Is the $140/each or for a pair?

I called Teraflex and they were unaware of people using the shackles for Explorers.

He wanted to know if you used a front or a rear shackle set from the YJ.

some old threads of interest...

Surely that 'little' tab could be reinforced?

It seems that the Revolver would not work because of the English Eye style spring wrap of the Explorer leafs. I would very much like to see the pictures of these shackles on your truck.

Godspeed: Where did you get the rear brake cable extension? How much did you pay? Do you have a part #?

hopefully some help

First off i got the rear series of the shakles, and second i had to get a friend of mine to make me a extenion for the brake line. I also consisdered the weight issue, and i have been out twice and have had nothing but fun. the only thing i may warn you guys of is the twisting action in the revolver shakle can through your leafs off alignment a little, but that is nothing that a hammer can not fix. I will try to get pis up as soon as i can.

I called Fourwheelers Supply in Phoenix. They carry Teraflex... FLY-N-HI doesn't.

Anyway, I asked if they carried the Revolvers and they said they won't sell them. I pressed for an answer as to why they wouldn't sell them. Here is the jist of their reply.

They said that when decending steep grades the shackle will open taking weight off the rear tires. First thing that came to mind was that video of Matt going down the slope on Hells Revenge. His rear springs were fully pulled out and it looked like the tires were about to lift. With the revolvers that could have been a VERY intersting situation. They also commented about bending the main leaf from forces exerted by the shackle.

In off camber situations the high side could conceivably open up allowing the body to flop over to the low side.

Just a few things to think about...

I have not gone down any real steep hills yet, but what i have done so far, i can tell a little difference but not alot. My rear end feels a little light. the extra travel in the rear alows my x from lifting up a rear tire. I think i may just have to take it a little slower, or maybe rig sometype of pin device that will hold the shackles in place when i need it.

Got any ideas

Thanks alot Rick for the warning, you probaly saved my butt.

Jason

A pin may be a great idea. Best of both worlds. Let us know if you figure out a way to do that. And we would still like to see the pics when you have a chance :D

Hey jason, have you told robbie about this? He is wanting to try something like this and i think he would like to see the shackles you have on an explorer in action. Have you been to beaver town with them to see how they are on steep slopes?

bump.... just joined the forum and i figured i would tell you guys i seen revolver shackles that had a strap fabbed to hold the revolver closed ont he road.... like a mini limiting strap.:D

signing up for the thread. PICS
