First time poster here, and there may be another place on the forum with this issue but I couldn't find it :-/

1997 Explorer AWD - Recently when I coast or am braking there's a very noticeable clicking noise under the front of the truck. It also make the same click noise just once when I shift into reverse or drive. When I accelerate it seems to slowly fade away. I had been told it could be a transfer case issue but I don't know diddly poo about cars. Love my explorer to death, just wish I knew more is all. If someone can shed some light or at least point me in the right direction on the forums I'd REALLY appreciate it. Thanks.

Its the front drive shaft. About 125.00 at junk yard. Quick fix about 20 min with all the tools. about 10 bolts. Go under driver side and you will see a shaft going from middle to front. Shake it and if it moves thats it. What happens is the boot goes bad and the balls inside get dirty and cause them to slip. If it has been going on for a while the front left tire will start to get warn on the inside none the less the noise will drive you nuts. Beware that if you take the shaft off the truck will roll even if in park. odd but it does. Good Luck!

Thanks to the both of you for the insight, it turns out the issue WAS the front driveshaft. I read this after having it rebuilt and installed at a shop and found out I coulda saved at least $250. My fault but you live and you learn, thanks again:thumbsup:
