2000 Explorer Limited 5.0
To quote the page from Kurtz Kustomz Motorsports:

Superchip: 5.0L 21hp 32 ft. lb.

21hp and 32 ft. lb.!!!!!!!

Call me crazy but that sounds WAY too good to be true.

That can't be usable horsepower. Does anyone know for sure what RPM those gains are rated at? Like 5500 RPM? If so than its pointless. Who operates their Explorer at 5500 rpm regularly enough to justify $230 for it?

I mean I'll spend $230 on a Superchip in a HEARTBEAT for a true 21hp 32 ft.lb. gain, but I don't see how in the H^ll a chip can truly add that kind of power at a usable rpm level. Especially since I already have a 3" Flowmaster exhaust and a KKM True-Rev, I find it hard to believe that I would actually notice much of a difference, if any.

So if anyone knows what they rate these things at I'd appreciate it. I'd love to buy one, but I might just wait and save up for a supercharger...

well, obviously theyre gonna advertise the biggest gains at high rpms; all car companies & aftermarket companies do it (i.e.: the honda s2000 has a lot of horsepower, but at like 8000.)

all i can do is give you my word for it (which is what i give everyone else and they seem to feel the same way after they try it for themselves); its gonna make a big difference, and you WILL feel it. give it a try, im sure if youre not happy (and i have yet to hear of someone who doesnt like the performance they get from their chip), sell it. theres always people looking for chips.

I'm gonna have to agree with tbomb.

I think it was $200 well spent. It does make a difference. It also adjusts the shifting of the transmission (if you have an auto) and makes it perform much better. I haven't heard anyone that wasn't happy with their Superchip/ Diablo chip. I have however, heard from plenty who were very unhappy with their JET chip. That includes me.

I agree with both of them. Mine made a considerable improvement. Well worth the money.

If you decide to get a Superchip, do a search for 'Superchip group buy'. You'll find out how to get a discount by being a member of this site.

yup, definately check out the group buy, its not an astounding discount over some other sites on the internet, but it does help support the site and thats what counts. Funny this comes up because I just bought a superchip for my truck and it just came in yesterday. Unfortunately I didn't clean off the computer terminal good enough and its too cold ot mess with getting the computer out again now, hopefully by this weekend I"ll have it in though.
People who get them swear by them.

I was wondering about those JET chips, apparently they suck. They're more expensive anyway.

I guess you all think that a Superchip makes a very noticable difference, but do you think it would make that big of a difference on a 5.0L with 3" Flowmasters and a KKM intake? A difference big enough to be worth $230?

Also will a Superchip make my mileage any better or worse? I'm currently getting 18.8mpg which is pretty good if you ask me for a 5.0L

hypertech power programmer three= more money, more power, better shifting, easier use, worth every penny

dont we have to use 93 octane for the chips? do they program the chips according to your truck? like mine...i have stock muffler but drilled airbox with K&N. if i decide to change to gibsob, do i have to sent the chip back to be reprogrammed?

the chips work with most cheap mods, everything up to a new maf will work without a custom chip, beyond that you would need a new chip

chip programming...

I've been doing some more research on Superchips, and I've seen people saying that they're Explorer 4.0L SOHCs shift at 6500rpm with the chip instead of 6000rpm stock. 6000!!! Man, maybe I baby my Explorer more than I thought but for one, I've NEVER revved my 5.0L to 6, which is its redline anyway. I think I've had it to like 4800rpm max. And mine shifts like at 2500rpm or so under normal driving. I gotta admit I do wish it would shift at a higher rpm, but not 6000.

Does anyone have a Superchip on a 5.0L? Preferably late model. If so I'd like to know how, if at all, it alters the shift points and stuff like that.

I've pretty much decided to get one, but I wanna get all the info I can before I spend $230. I've only had my Explorer for like 4 months and I've already spent like $600 on add ons. Course I did spend $3000+ on the stereo in my old '91 Explorer, but that Explorer was paid off.

Thanks a lot! :D

The red-line on your 5.0L is around 5,000 RPM. Just because your tach goes to 6000 RPM, doesn't mean that is your red-line. If you want to find out what it is, take it out to the open highway. Take off from a stand still with the pedal down. Don't let up until it shifts to 2nd. It should be around 5000 RPM.

You're right, I meant to say that 6000 is the top of the tach.

I do have 1 more question, where exactly does the Superchip install on a 2000 Limited 5.0L? Is it behind the passenger side kick panel?

I think you'd be happy with the superchip. I know dealers vary but if you get it through Mike Troyer who is doing the group purchase, if your not satisfied with it you can always send it back. He gives a warranty on it.

Mine didn't change the shift point for normal driving. Still shifted around 2500 to 3000 as always, just a much firmer shift. It's the WOT shift point that it raises. Lets you turn a few more RPMs when you need to.

You have a computer in the firewall under the hood, right? Passenger side. If so, I'm sure it will install on the back of it.

Mike troyer is a good guy. He rambled on and on about the chip and i gained some knowledge. I plan on buying this chip sometime soon. Gas prices are going up big time here though :(

if I were to buy it from this Mike Troyer guy, how do I go about ordering? If its a group buy, wouldn't I have to wait until everyone else ordered theirs before I get mine? Or would they be able to ship it right away?

Otherwise I'm planning on getting it from KKM.

mine shifts at 5,450 currently...

2k... no you don't have to wait for everyone... the group purchase has been going on for several months... they can ship it as soon as next day (gotta pay extra though)

I just got mine installed today. It's like, holy crap!

kinda off subject a bit, but i bought the superchip for my 94 thunderbird, and it dropped almost a second from my quarter. Dont know if it was a combo of the wires and plugs i put in with it or not, but i will back anyone who says superchips are the bomb.
