It seems this problem only occurs after the vehicle has been started during the day at some point Say if I get in and start it for the 2nd time in the day sometimes the idle surges really bad, and sometimes dies out. Could it be something to do with my MAF sensor? I did take a road trip over a month ago and I've heard from other sources that the explorers, and rangers will display the "check engine" light only on LONG trips though? Could this also be the culprate?

Try cleaning your MAF and your idle air control valve, Some times they get gunked up. Carb cleaner seems to work the best.

What is the best way I can clean the MAF can I just spray it with carb cleaner and let it air dry, also can I clean it a bit with a cotton swab? And the idle air.....is that the sensor that has a sampling tube right before the throttle body?

the mass airflow sensor shouldnt be touched its a thin wire basically and it looks like its pretty easy to break. The idle air control valve is the valve at the front of the engine where the intake hose meets the engine. There are two small holes in the valve and sometimes those can get clogged up.

I have the same exact problem. Any word on this?
