also every so often it just wont start just turns over. and i just uplug the TPS and plug back in and usually starts up right after that.
could it just need the TPS replaced?

If disconnecting and reconnecting the TPS seems to fix the problem, I would start first by inspecting that connector. Make sure the TPS is getting a good connection.

The EEC-IV computer won't catch every fault, but I would at least pull codes before just replacing the TPS. TPS is also a simple potentiometer and isn't very difficult to test with a voltmeter.

Is it putting out check engine codes? That's where to start. Could be a clogged cat (??) or bad O2s (?) or the new FPR is defective. I would pull the spark plugs and inspect them, too. That will give you an idea of what's going on in the engine.

it does have new o2 sensors in it also

how would i check the TPS if its getting correct voltage?

Get a wiring diagram.
Check Vref and make sure the TPS is receiving +5V from the computer (relative to ground)
measure voltage at the other two TPS pins. One of the pins should show something just under 1 V, the other will show 5V-the other pin.
While monitoring these voltages, rotate the TPS through it's range of motion. Voltage should change smoothly.
I don't remember the spec, but you can also measure the resistance of the potentiometer. As the TPS rotates, the resistance should change smoothly, with no circuit breaks or shorts.
Most manuals should have a little piece about testing a TPS. Try the vehicle repair guides at www.autozone.com

Maybe you just have a gummed up throttle body. I still say pull the spark plugs, see what they look like. That can give you a lot of information.

Same Thing

If you get your problem figured out, PLEASE let me know what it was. My piece of crap 1993 is doing the exact same thing. I've replaced plugs, O2 sensor cleaned IAC, replaced the MAF and none of this fixed it.

I get the same codes: 137/173 (running rich)

I also have a funky smell, which could be the cat converter.

Good luck!

Sorry I couldn't help, but I needed to vent!!

It's not a piece of crap, its a 12 year old vehicle. It just needs some normal maintenance parts. In your case sounds like (or smells like :D ) a bad catalytic converter. Ya might also make sure your fuel pressure regulator is doing it's job. A bad FPR can kill brand-new O2 sensors, too. So I hope your new O2 sensors are still ok.

I realize the vehicle is pretty old. I'm just tired of putting time/money into this thing. I've only had it 1 month!!! I'm sure the guy I bought it from knew something was wrong, but he didn't tell me anything.

I'll look into the FPR and cat converter in a few weeks. I'll probably need new O2 sensors not too. I'm leaving for Vegas tomorrow so maybe I'll hit it big and be able to afford a new X.

Thank you for your time/input!

Cat Converter

Can I replace the cat converter myself? I'm not a great mechanic, but I can do the basics and some. The FPR is something I know I can handle, I'm just not sure about the converter.

I found one for $190. Is that reasonable?

Related question

So the explorer out right died on me today as I creeped home. I was messing with some vacuum lines and noticed the fuel injectors on the passenger side were loose to where I could rotate them clockwise or counter clockwise. Is that normal?

No that's not normal, they shouldn't be loose in there. Sounds like you need to pull the injectors and clean them. I hope your fuel rail is ok. Since you mention the injectors, I would first look at the them and not worry about the catalytic converter right now. The search button is your friend, there are lots o' threads about pulling the injectors and removing the upper intake manifold (which you will have to do to remove the injectors..but don't worry it's very easy).

what ever happened here?,... im having the same issues and need resolution..... :(
