Without getting into a lot of detail and excesses I removed my damaged 5 STANDARD Trans [manual], installed an automatic unit [it was free]. the blunt of the transfer was cut and paste had no trouble other then drive-shaft length .trouble is will not go into overdrive 1-2-3-and that’s all she gets?

Vech used my is a 10-93 explorer SPORT is a 4.L manual X a/c /p/s/ abs power everything but not power seats.

DONATING.1991 explorer xlt X 4.0l….auto a/c, /p/s, power everything no abs and is a 4 door.

OK I swapped the wiring harness between the two and plugged them easily were they go. Have + voltage to neutral switch and to one of the 3 wires into pan [solenoids]
I have also a B&M shifter on floor was a nice idea being that I didn’t have to swap the column out and deal with the stock linkage set up.
I have clutch pedal neutral safety switch running manual with my hand [I just slide it into start mode and then slide back to run position then I drive].
The Cruz control works flawlessly, shifts great threw 1-2-3- but no 4 or is it 4=OD...
I installed a fuse into any and all possible fuse locations in passenger compartments and under hood. Still not working is there something I am missing perhaps the neutral switch from auto column had alternate current passages?
I did try to swap computers in a hope that it would cure it IT didn’t even rune with the 91 xlt computer any ideas?

the explroer has 1-2-d-od

if it isnt going into any gear, it sounds liek tyour linkage isnt right or the neutral switch isnt allowing shifting... not sure if its an issue, but with an automatic, you normally need to press the brake pedal to get it to shift.. not exactly sure the setup on the explorer, but do you have a provision so the trnany knows the brake pedal is pressed to shift?

Someone else will know the A4LD better than I but I'll try: I can't remember if the computer controls the 3-4 shift but I do know that the computer controls the torque converter lockup. In either case, you're going to need an automatic computer to control those functions. Also, you don't mention if you hooked up the vacuum modulator and the kickdown(?) cable so that the transmission knows when to shift.

yes and no i did hook vacuum up to modulator and i did not hook up the kick down esp. after driving it ,it seems to kick down perfectly without the kick down attached .another thing it will go threw all thee gears regardless of shifter position?shifter in forward gear location only . it finds park and reverse great . but 1 2 drive and o.d positions no difference

If you shift it to 1st it should stay in first (However it may pop out if you over rev it). Same with 2nd, it should always stay in 2nd. Are you sure that you have your shifter points matched up to the trans linkage points exactly?

ok rereading it doenst sound liek the linkage is set properly... you say in forward it shifts all by itself... and goes through the gears... that means you are engaging od which is 4th gear and it will shift through 1-4 when it wants to if the selector is in OD

it will only shift threw the first three gears reguardless of Shifter selection . i cant get O.D. i think amn going to check cable adj maybe just try to remove it and manually place into o.d. and see what happens . also does the kick down have anything to do with upshifting on this trans i assumed it didnt ?
