Hey everyone, this is my first post, i hope its in the right forum, but anyways i hope you can help me. I was about to put i my beloved X for sale, and took it in to get a couple things checked out when the midas guy found pretty substantial problems. First the rubber bushing(SP?) gromet thingy on the sway bars are tottallly melted. I am having a hard time finding replacments, where car i get these, also how hard is it for a non mechanic to do it. the estimate they gave me was $385 for the parts and labour. How is that? Also i need to replace the rear brakes and adn get them serviced which they quoted $231. How hard is this job, I did replace the front brakes about 2 monthes ago.. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for anything

if it's just the bushings that you have to replace, it's pretty easy. you can do it without even jacking up the rear end, though jacking it up and supporting it with jack stands will give you more room and safety in working.

basically it's a simple unbolt old bushings, lube up the new bushings and replace where the old ones used to be. you might run into a little difficulty since your truck is a 91 and those bolts have been on there a long long time... a little liquid wrench should help loosen them up if you can't get them off.

that price they quoted you is outrageous! just for new bushings and installation of them? if they're telling you that you have to change your entire sway bar, then that's a little different, since you have to unbolt the lower bolts of the rear shocks to get to the linkage that the sway bar bolts on to. just a little more work.

bushings should run you about $20. check the dealer or even pep boys.

the entire sway bar and bushings should be about $120-140.

either way, you'd save a lot of $$ if you just got under your car with a socket wrench and did it yourself. if you were able to work on your front brakes, you should have no problem with the rear sway. unfortunately, i can't speak for the front sway (no experience with that) or your rear drums (i've got discs on my 98). hope this helps.
