Switch under hood of 03 XLT 4.6??

Never really noticed before but on the passenger side engine compartment near the coolant tank of my 03 Explorer 4.6 there is a switch that has a rubber boot that will be closed when hood is lowered. If my hood had a light underneath to illuminate the engine compartment I would understand the reason for this switch but I don't so what is it for?

I believe it's for the factory theft system.

There is a switch similar to what you are describing on my wife's fusion, it tells you if the hood is popped while the key is on (like the door ajar light)

As stated, that is the "hood ajar" switch for the alarm system. I'll post a pic of it tonight when I get home.
