Is running Synthetic ATF fluid worth it. I'm gonna drop them money into getting it power flushed. It sometimes slip on the shift from second to third. I don't wanna drop even more money into the synthetic just to have the tranny fail and loose all the fluid.

if your tranny slips, i would advise getting it professionally checked out... there is no point in dumping $ into it if its already failing... also, i heard if its already failing and you do a flush to it, it could do more harm then good....

synthetic is better than dino, however, if there are arlready problems, i think syn might make them more prevalent as it is purer

Not in my opinion. Regular transmission fluid does the job just fine as long as it is changed every other year. :)

Which means mine is probably 7 years over due!

^ That is not good! If you tend to leave transmission fluid that long THEN you might benefit to having synthetics in there because they tend to have longer life.

I think I'm gonna take it to a tranny shop now and have them give it a once over and have them flush it possibly. Have to make a few phone calls over the weekend.

I disagree. If its already slipping, all synthetic fluid (which is more slippery) is going to do is exacerbate the issue.

do a fluid and filter change with regular fluid and then change the fluid out again (not the filter) in another week or so.

Use regular dex/merc fluid.

It there a " too late " time to switch to synth. ?
I am nearing 45k and plan on getting a flush and fill over to synth.

If you have a problem, fix it.

Then do a flush and switch to synthetic by all means.

I just put the Ford Motorcraft full synthetic ATF in my trany on monday and it was well worth the 22.00 a quart. I had a trany issue also and changed to the full synth and bingo GONE! I would only recomend the BG or the Motorcraft though.

never too late

I just flushed mine and switched to Amsoil, I have 125,000 on it. It seems like the tranny is better than before, but it worked pretty well before the flush. :burnout:

auh, screw the flushing an stuff, save up ur pennys and drop the auto an put the 5 speed in....

what about miles...

Two years is fine, but what if you put high miles on. Mine is one year old and has 35000 miles. Should it be flushed and synthetic added? I've been thinking about having this done. I'm already using synthetic oil every 5-6 thousand miles.

$22/quart!? What is amsoil? There is a place that sells that around here. Just haven't had the time to stop and check the price.

Ford recommends the first transmission change at 60K which is a bit on the high side. 35k is a lot of driving for one year. This is a no brainer (doh)- you gotta flush every year. :)

"AMSOIL ATF should be changed at intervals up to three times longer than the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer" from Amsoil.

I know some people who have well over 100k miles on Amsoil ATF with no worries whatsoever.

I would do a flush ( you can easily do it yourseld ) and switch to Amsoil right away. And you do not need to flush and replace the Amsoil every year.

Al,

This is the way i am leaning. Planning on having it changed at the next oil change. Would have been done last time, but the place i use did not have the correct fittings to flush a 2003. I See you're a PADI instructor :chug: I love to dive, but do not get to do it often enough. Mostly warm waters of mexico and the carribian. You just can't beat 200ft visibility :p

Best,
Texan

Mercon V is full synthetic and backwards compatible. Also get a bottle of Lubegaurd - which is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

LubeGuard

Most shops will not send a tranny out the door without this additive to cure chatter and valvebody hangups.

Also for diagnostic questions, I found this web site that has some pretty valuable information.

Mercon V is not necessarly synthetic, most often it is a semi-synthetic ATF.
