Can I just add Synthetic ATF to Power Steering?

I am going to replace my power steering fluid today. It states 1996 + explorers (Mercron type ATF). So can I just buy a bottle of Mobile 1 Synthetic Mercron Tranny Fluid and dump it in?

How much would I need if I just syphon out what is in the resovior?

Yes, you can use synthetic, as long as it's Mercon rated.

When I siphoned mine, I could remove about 3/4 quart. If you do this 3-4 times, you eventually get a nearly complete change.
