I am coming up on 60k and will be changing oil to synthetic and Tranny will have a full replacement of ATF to synthetic. My friends in this area seem to prefer to mobil 1 to other brands. I'm leaning towards mobil 1

I would like to hear from synthetic users why they chose one brand over another for engine oil and ATF.

All info is appreciated.

Happy 4th of July.

I'm not a mechanic or an engineer but I always go with what the manufacturer recommends. I'm sure there are lots of opinions on this. I always say keep it changed every 3k and you'll be fine.
I'm with you on the small mods!!

Mobil 1 synthetic for me... I find it makes a huge difference. It runs smoother and starts smoother... well worth the extra cash IMO.

I just went to mobil1 last week, Love it!, Runs smoother for sure.

Ben

For a better fluid, take a good look at Amsoil.

Good luck ....

I run Mobil 1 in everything. I am very happy with Mobil 1. I find that they are very good fluids at a fairly reasonable price. I do agree with aldive though that Amsoil makes better fluids than Mobil 1. However IMO it's not a big enough difference to justify the price difference.

I've been running Castrol full synthetic in my 91' F-150 for the past three years. I think it's been doing a good job. I can see the difference at the end of a cycle when the oil is drained. The spent oil still has viscosity to it. I changed the Ex over this past oil change. Maybe in my head, but I'm feeling a smoother engine.

I'm synthethic from now on...

are you going to extend your change intervals as well??

If not you are doing nothing more than wasting money. If you change your oil ever 3,000 miles there is no reason for synthetic.

I run for 4000 miles, change filter and add a quart. I do a full change at 12,000 miles.

just did my oil change today . I always use mobil 1..i've wanted to try amsoil (i'm even a distributor of amsoil) but IMO mobil 1 is better.
I do it every 4500-5000 miles depending on how hard i've been running the truck

that's an interesting interval.

Yeah.. I know. Call me weird... I won't trust a filter past about 4000 miles, but I'm finding that the synthetic oil is holding up well.

Thanks for all the opinions. I have co-workers who have mentioned the oil filter change every 3-5k miles and top off the oil; then a complete oil and filter change annually. That sounds like a sensible approach.

For those that do the filter change... Are you using a special filter i.e. mobil makes a synthetic oil filter that is designed to filter synthetic oil blah, blah, blah. Or are you using the motorcraft filter?

Al - If memory serves, you initially changed to mobil 1, and then to Amsoil. What was your reasoning for Amsoil? Were you unhappy with mobil?

Again, thanks for all your input.

So be it.

Just look at the chemistry of each oil and see for yourself. Science, not opinions.

Amsoil Royal Purple, Mobil1????

:feedback:
Where is Amsoil sold and how is it priced compared to Royal Purple or Mobil1?

I'm looking at going with a synthetic for my Ranger 01 4L SOHC 4X4 or is that more like $X$...sometimes. I'd like to change the motor oil, diffs and transfer case all to a synthetic. Right now I'm pushing just over 100k and all appears well the my ranger. I'm getting 18.5 to 20 mpg since fixing a vacum leak issue. Now, is there any problem switching all the above over to a synthetic product? Has anyone had problems in doing so?
Any tips or input would be helpful. I'd really like to help this truck to last and if there are is mpg to gain, well who wouldn't want more of that these days.
