Picked up a '96xlt, just threw in a sony cdx-m610 hu (got it for looks), but i'm clueless about 5x7's and amps.
Ideally i want a 4-5 channel and a 10-12'' sub, but budget leaves me with only about another $800. I've looked at a full xplod system, but after seeing everybodies systems here, i've reconsidered. Any help is appreciated.

hmmm let's see here,

I myself would shop around a bit,
and i would definatly go for an dual amp setup,

1 4 channel amp for the system and an mono block for the sub.

12" earthquake magma,
1 mono block 500watts rms amp
and like an 4* 100 watt 4 channel amp.

the 2 amps and the sub would run you 600 bucks wich leaves you 200 bucks to get the rest, i would go for 5*7's in the front and tweeters in the door then maybe some other in the rear to complete the sound and get some highs coming from the rear.
something like that, i definatly would go with an earthquake 12" magma..

what ever you do check out at http://www.wholesalesounds.com they have unbeatable deals.... you might also try out http://www.justwoofers.com (they also got sets) or Dead Link Removed

shop around and remeber this, how cheaper the woofer how less bass you get from them , more expensiver woofer will give you alot more bass then an el cheapo...and they might even last a bit longer ;)

thanks man. I'm looking for a high fidelity system (bass, but good bass) but I don't know where to start for 5x7's or tweeters, any reliable brands, does it matter?

well i got 6*9 pioneers that i bough for like 80 bucks at wally world...they sound good, though i got an 13 band equalizer between eveything that's not the bass...of course it does matter if you buy an non-brand crappy speaker or an brand name speaker but you don't have to go for the higest price one to get an good sound out of the system, you can have the best speakers in the world but if your filters and setup suck then the sound isn't gonna be any good either.

What i did was put filters on my 3-ways to where i filter anything below 80 out of it, that way they don't sitord easy and you can run higher volumes to them...the 12" (or in my case the 15") delivers enough bass to where the other speakers don't need to produce any bass at all...

i'll make an pic of where my tweets are located in the morning and post it in this thread, those tweets are just regular Jensen 80 watt tweeters wich costed me like 30 bucks at wally world , and they sound good....you don;t want tweeters to be loud as he!! , that doesn't add to the enviroment if they are playing too loud then the ones in the doors don't sound right...you have to get the feeling that the highs and mids come from any direction...and it doesn't matter where the bass is , that always feels like it's coming out of all directions...

the trick of an good audio system is to get all the speaker dialed in to where you can hear then all at any level , ofcourse there are personall preferences and you can dial those in your self...the best music to set your stuff to is an live recoreded cd of any music type....if you dial all in right then it's like you are in the middle of it....instead of listening to it from an distance...

an really good cd is The naked truth - played by the Golden earing....that's recorded live and acoustic...that cd sounds awesome on my system...cause you get the feeling you in the adience...

If you really want good sound, get a component set. there are plenty of component sets that wont run you too much, but that still sound good at the same time. Look into somthing from IDQ or DEI. If you are willing to buy used equiptment, you could prolby get some good stuff for a reasonable price.

heard nothing but good remarks about IDQ...my friend just order a couple DVC 10's to replace his kickers..i'm waiting to see how they sound and if they live up to their rep. JL will give you clean bass..mtx will give you deep bass..go listen to displays and friends systems and decide if you like what you hear. jensen, pioneer, kenwood speakers to me are crap..thats my opinion.
