My wife is wanting a better system for her 98 4 door. It already has an aftermarket HU. My question is can I use a 4 channel amp to run a front set of speakers and use the other 2 channels to push a single sub? If so, how do I hook up 2 channels to 1 sub?

also, for front speakers, should I go with 6.5" components or a 6x8 component set(Infinity)?

thanks in advance

You will want to look for an amp that you can bridge the rear chanels on.

Personaly I would buy two 2 chanel amps.

Also, does the HU have one or two sets of pre-outs? If it only has one you will not be able to run a four chanel amp with out piggy backing the pre-outs.

The HU has 2 sets of pre-outs and a seperate subwoofer out.

Are you using the factor sub or an after market sub?
If you are running the factory sub you will want to make sure it can handle the RMS & Max watts the amp puts out.

I would go with the 6.5 component as you will get much better sound. I have Kenwood 5x7" now but will be up grading to components next year.

Since your HU has a sub pre-out I would highly recomend seperate amps. This way you can use a more powerful amp for the sub.

If your HU has a built in bass boost control for your sub you can control the how hard and deep it will hit.

thanks Dan. I will use an aftermarket sub, probably a single 10" or single 12". Nothing major, just something to give it some bass. She listens to the hip-hop/Top 40 stuff. Maybe 2 amps would be better. Is under the rear seat the best mounting option for them?

why not use one 4 channel amp for the components and a single mono amp for the sub
have you considered a 5 channel amp /4 chanels for the front and rear speakers and one chanel for the sub/s. i use the kicker kx700.5 in my cobra and paired with the infiniti 6x8 components it sounds great with a single l5 12" sub. i actually just picked up a zx700.5 for my explorer to run with 2 10" infinity kappa perfects and i will be picking up more 6x8 components from infinity for the truck i like them that much.

Green99 he is only amping the front speakers.

vdaily89 under the rear seats is the best place to mount the amps.

Depanding on the actual size of the amp it may not fit on the drivers side.
I had to notch one of the the seat support leggs so mine would fit. I would post a pic but my battery died in my digital camera:mad:

thats cool, i was just suggesting the system would sound better with all 4 speakers amplified the same amount. but i have seen some three channels out ther too for 2 chanel stereo and a sub.

Thanks for the replies. I may just go with a 2 channel for the front speakers and either a mono or 2 channel to push the subs. I don't think I'll mess with the rear door speakers, but if I do then I'll just go with a 4 channel to push all the speakers. I'll probably go with Infinity speakers. I have the 6.5" Kappa components in my Mustang & really like them.
