T-case issue

i have a 99 explorer 4.0 SOHC When i engage my 4x4 i hear a grinding buzzing sound that does not stop untill i disengage it. any clues as to what might be causing this.

When I had a problem with my transfer case, it was caused by a leaky seal. I was getting a noise the same way.

try setting the 4x4 switch to auto and then disconnect the battery for 5 minutes. Sometimes the encoder on the shift motor gets confused.
