ok i have the transmission off the truck, it just took a little convincing. Now i pulled the pan off and it was full of metal shards, and before this it wouldnt go into reverse, i figured its either the trans or the t case...i juss dont know witch, im pretty convinced that its the trans..but does neone else have an imput before i bring the trans to be rebuilt??

The transfer case has nothing to do with reverse. If it's full of metal, it's not a good sign. A rebuild very well may be in order.

You might want to think about doing the rebuild yourself. There is a great thread on rebuilding the A4LD:

There are a bunch of things to consider when deciding to swap (IMHO a no-no) or a rebuild.

With metal particle contamination, it is probably a good idea to replace the cooler (~$50), radiator (~$125), cooler lines, all the soft parts (frictions included), and any hard parts that have failed (at least one hard part failed or you wouldn't have metal in the pan).

Also read this Tech Bulletin about the front seal blowout problem (this is why I don't think it is a good idea to swap one tranny for another - part of it is machined while attached to that particular motor, in other words, a swap might not fit to the engine well enough to give you good long tranny life).
