I ask this question here while back on the General site and never got any help, so I will try one more time here. I have a 92 EB that when you turn the key to the on position the tach automatically goes to 3800 RPM. When I start the engine the tach still reads 3800 RPM. The only time it will read higher is at full throttle and then it shows 4000 RPM. The engine idles at around 1000 RPM. Does anyone have any idea what could cause the tach to read so high? It (tach) was like this when I purchased it.

Hi Lewis,

I'm sorry to hear that you never got a reply before. I get that sometimes. No, I get that A LOT. Sucks I know. I'm no expert but sounds like you got a broken Tach. You might want to try to get new Tach at Summit Racing for cheap.

Good Luck. I'm sure a more expertise reply would be on it's way.

That's my backup plan if nobody can figure out the problem. I would rather keep the factory tach. But will go the aftermarket way if need be. Thanks.

You may check a salvage yard for a used tach/Instrument cluster. I'm not real familiar with the older explorers, wish I could be of more help. Also, If I remember correctly the tach is wird to the coil or the solenoid to read voltage and show the rpm's that the motor is turning. Help me out here guys, am I right or wrong?
