Tachometer

Also having this problem!

Well guys this just happened to me. I thought I would post a reply to let you all know that this seems to be a SOMEWHAT COMMON problem. Anyways it happened to me when I first turned on the car today while running errands. The gauge reads like 100RPMS when off (like most do) then the minute I turn the car on to the RUN position without even starting it the tachometer jumps to 3000RPM. Then when the car is running & driven the tachometer moves only slightly and doesn't seem to want to go above 4000RPM. I will try and take the tach apart sometime and clean the contacts and what not as stated above and let you all know my results.

I was just curious if there has been any other developments/fixes on this since the last post.

Thanks a lot guys! This message board is the best. I really don't want to ever get another car because I love my X and because I don't know of another online community as nice and helpful as this one!!

I have had the same problem but i managed to fix mine, without buying a new tack. i used the advice from the others on this forum to fix it.. first i disassmpled the cluster and got the tach out. sprayed liquid film ( like wd40) on it just to clea the connections a bit. if you look at the back of the tach there are the 4 nuts.. the top right one take a 8mm socket and loosen it off a bit. i had to play with mine a bit just to hit the right spot but it works now... might have to re adjust it down the road but i know what to do now.. thanks, saved me 50 bucks:P

I'm having a similar problem, and I appreciate all the help that's been given so far, but if you'll pardon the noob question, how does one remove the trim to get at the clear plastic IC cover? All I see are three hex nuts on top of the IC alcove behind the wheel, but even after removing those I'm having a hell of a time getting the thing off. Any hidden screws I should be aware of?

Part of the problem might be that I'm working on a 2000 XLS... it appears that most of you are working with earlier models.

Any help (especially pics!) would be most appreciated.
