Tailgate lamp switch?

I have a 91 xl and can't figure out how or where the lamp switch is for the rear liftgate. It isn't in the Haynes repair manual either. Where the heck is it and how do I shut it off If I have the tail gate open? It is very annoying to have the dome light on when at the drive-in.

It's built into the liftgate latches. You have to manually shut both latches and it should turn off. Just remember to unlatch it again before you try to shut it.

On our '92 its the latch on the drivers side.. I just reach up. and squeeze the latch closed.. now the dome light is off..

As already metioned.. remember to open it up again (turn the normal knob you turned to open the gate) before you try to close it.. otherwise it makes a bad noise.
