Well, Wanted to post my results after replacing various Ford parts, and I believe that I fInally solved the :

*Rough idle
*hard start
*rich mixture
*CEL
*bad smell
*sudden bad milage

problems!

I believe the FPR was the main culprit, but each item I replaced would make some small improvement. Checking the codes proved very illusive for me, connect to the EEC plug and the codes would vanish.

Did MAF after 145k miles, no big whoop...
Checked the PVC, just for fun.
Did IAC, small idle improvement...
Did the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve, this REALLY Did make a big effect on the starting!
When my milage went to 7mpg, I finally did the FPR.

Guess what?

Milage up!
idle smooth (for a 4.0)!
no CEL!
no smell!

Just thought some might want to share the info!

Wil

Glad to see you got it fixed:D

Keep a good check on your vacuum lines now. Since the FPR went out and your milage went to crap I'm sure it was leaking into the vacuum system. This will tear heck into the rubber vacuum lines at the tree on the rear of the intake and can even start a leak. Just something to look out for, I'm glad you found the problem. At the price of fuel these days I'd put another engine in if thats what I had to do to get better then 7mpg.

good advice Doug, ive actually seen this happen. a friend of mine drove his 89 GT 'vert around with a bad FPR for several weeks until we fixed it one day. several months later it developed a vacuum leak. opon tracing down the leak, we discovered about 10ft. of line that was nearly dissolved all the way through.

keep an eye on it roadkill.

thanks doug

I appreciate your advice!

As a matter of fact, I will prob replace all the vac lines next time I do the water lines, which is about every two years.

The mileage went to crap only for about a week, but that's too long as it is.

Gotta have good rubber!!

thanks!
