Hi,

I have a mountaineer -02 4.6 V8, 80500 miles.
It all started with a flashing light "High temp/low oil" and the analog oilgauge droped to "L" a second. I drove the car 180 miles. Then a tapping/knocking sound came from the engine area and was tapping/knocking faster with a higher rpm. The car ran fine, just a little harder to start but thats all.
60 miles later a more and agressiver sound started. It was just like something was loose in the engine.

Now I havent used the car anymore, but do you guys have any ideeas?

Sounds to me like an "over heating condition" led to an "oil pressure" issue or vice versa. Do not start or drive the vehicle any further till you have it looked at by a mechanic. The internal engine components are most likely damaged from the long drive and low oil supply pressure to the engine and the over heating, hence the "knocking sound" you now hear. Engine parts need proper cooling and oil lubrication or they can get damaged. Sorry to say but it doesn't sound good for you.

What is the oil level? As a damage control option, I would drain whatever is left of the oil in the pan and replace it immediately.

What does the oil quality look like coming out?

I replaced the oil instantly after the second sound appeard. The oil was normal black, not any burn smell or metallic parts.
I cant say it did anyting for the sound, it sounded like before.

Thanks for reply.

i thought so, but do you have any ideea why the "hi temp/low oil" just flashed and not stayed on? If the lamp had stayed on, I wouldnt driven anymore.

Low oil pressure can fluctuate between good and bad pressure from time to time or intermittently. The warning light or message would come and go as the oil pressure dropped too low or went back to a higher pressure. You may have some kind of partial oil flow blockage going on and when that happens, engine parts don't get lubricated and move as freely(seize up) as they should and heat begins to build up. It could be anything from "sludge build up" in the engine oil passages or an oil pump going bad. When you first saw the warning light go off, you should have pulled over right away to check things out with the oil. The knock sound that followed would have made me shut it down for good right away.

If the internal engine was damaged due to the low oil pressure and the knock sound followed, a fresh oil change won't cure the damage that was already done.

"DONT READ ANY FURTHER... IT'S A DOOR AJAR SENSOR"

While your car is on... bang on each door one by one. When you bang the door with the bad sensor... the door ajar light and dome light will flicker. It's most likely the rear hatch!!!!! The rear hatch has 2 sensors... 1 for the hatch and 1 for the rear hatch window. EASY FIX: remove rear interior panel. Locate sensors and unplug them. Buy those staples you put into a staple gun that are curved and for stapling television cable to a wall. Insert the staple into the plug holes on the connector. That will close the circuit and result in the door ajar sensor always being off even though you open the rear hatch. Who needs a door ajar sensor anyways. Just make sure you close your door properly. Even though you replace the sensor with a new one... the latch gets bent over time and the sensors will never work the same. You can thank me when you fix yours!!! WHOOOOPIIII!!!!!
