Here's something interesting. My 98 currently has 74,xxxx miles on it. I just starting to hear the TC rattle this past spring. It would make a slight rattle at around 2700 rpm's only under load and only until the engine was completely warmed up. After that, it's completely silent. I always use Castrol GTX 10W-30 and recently started using Lucas oil additive. It was actually after I started using the Lucas that I started hearing the TC rattle.
Did an oil change last weekend and didn't have any Lucas so there's nothing but good ol Castrol in the crank cast.

What's happened is the slight rattle I was hearing is completely gone. I cannot get the TC to make any noise at all. Now I do find it hard to believe that oil alone woud make this happen, BUT It's the only thing I did to the truck.

This spring I do plan on taking the front of the engine apart to replace the TC tensioner and guides. The truck is MINT so it's well worth the preventitive maintenance to keep it running strong.

So take it for what it's worth, but my TC noise has gone away for now after nothing more then an oil change. Might want to stay away from the thick oil additives, they may be doing more harm then good!
