Hello, I have a '92XLT, 6cyl that runs very poorly on cold start then warms up after a few minutes (2-3) and then works fine with the exception of milage dropping lately. First guess was EGR but now I hear of a temp sensor for the coolant not the air? Hope it is easy to find and replace. Any tips or advice on this symptom and/or these sensors? Thanx!

You need a new ECT sensor part # F2AZ-12A648-A / DY-681 and it is a two wire sensor and it is found on the inake manifold by the thermstat.

ECT

Brian, Thanx for the reply! I found this part in my book last night and remember seeing it when I took the sheild off the other day to have a peek. I figure I'll start by replacing it first, zero out the puter (just disconnect the battery right?), and then take it in for the $50 diagnosis if it still does'nt work right. I'll probably wait till Sat. and let y'all know what happens. Thanx again. Steve

Did'nt work!

Well, the ECT sensor replacement went very smoothly. $15 and 15 minutes it was done. I disconnected the battery, then took the old one off, went to the autoparts store, came back, put the new one in. It still runs rough on cold start! Is 45min-1hr long enough to zero out the puter? What else might it be?? Could a clogged fuel filter cause problems like this until the pressure built up enough? It's my wife's Explorer so I don't see symptoms first hand other than a spin around the block. She said every once and a while the voltage will drop like it's trying to die when she is at a stop sign till she steps on the gas, then fine. What kind of symptoms go with an EGR failure? '92XLT 6cyl. Thanx!

Need more info. Does your temp go above the N in NORMAL on the guage? What is your mpg? Are you getting any error codes or lights? Any aftermarket parts? What kind of gas?

This could be many things...but because yours is an early model, like mine, there are less things to go wrong. If the temp is below the N in NORMAL start off by replacing the thermostat. I was in the same boat as you and this fixed it. If you are getting error codes, what are they? This will drive whatever else could be the problem.

Cold Start

Hey Thanx! It seems to run in the same temp range as ever, no difference (On the "O" in Normal). The only lights we get is the "check engine" that has come on and off since we bought it 3years ago. This problem did just start last fall when we had the first cold snap here in Texas (not that cold). I thought maybe it was the gas (still selling summer mix?). We only use Chevron but I'm not that impressed with it. Our milage has suffered at the same time, going from 18+ to 10-12 mpg lately!:( No loss of power during operation, still moves well. I'm thinking O2 sensor or EGR but really just guessing at this point since the ECT did'nt work. Any help would be great! Thanx a bunch.

Self Test?

BTW, I did the self test using an anolog voltmeter as described in my book. Sure nuf the needle sweeps across but the codes I thought I saw arn't in my book??? (18, 33, 83)?
Not sure how accurate that test is anyway....
Any place to look up more codes? I did'nt even see one for the EGR anyway?
Troubleshot Steve

I would think about your FPR as well as the O2 sensor. You can look those codes up in a Haynes manual or here:
http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/2digit.html

The codes seem to point at your EGR, so I would try that first before the FPR and O2.

i just sent another email to you about this. i think i have the problem solved

Progress?

thanx everyone! I'll let you know what happens next!

Have you tied cleaning your IAC valve? Bad IAC wil cause crappy idle on cold start till it warms up.

Small cylindrical thing on the throttle body. Two bolts hold it on and there is an electrical connector on top. Clean with carb cleaner.
